Mapping the Liminality - East and West

Work from the Han-Mee Artists Association of Greater Washington May 8 through June 7, 2026 Opening Reception: Friday, April 3, 2026 (5pm-7pm) Corkran and Tubbs Gallery The exhibition “Mapping the Liminality”, presented by the Han-Mee Artists Association of Greater Washington (HMAAGW), celebrates the vibrant experiences and creativity of Korean American artists in the Washington, D.C. area. Founded in 1975, the association has devoted itself to preserving cultural heritage while championing diversity and visibility in the broader art world. This exhibition brings together artists whose work explores themes of identity, transformation, and belonging, presenting “liminality” as a dynamic space where different cultures and histories intersect, overlap, and flourish. Through painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, and mixed media, the exhibition reveals that identity is a journey, shaped by memory, adaptation, and community. By exploring the delicate balance between heritage and change, Mapping the Liminality inspires visitors to reflect on how cultural boundaries can present both challenges and exciting new possibilities. Curated by Jinchul Kim, Professor of Art at Salisbury University and current Vice President of HMAAGW, the exhibition honors the essential role that Korean American artists play in enriching conversations about diaspora, hybridity, and resilience in our interconnected world.
