The Phantom of the Open

The Phantom of the Open is a heart-warming and remarkable true story about a man who is a dreamer and unrelenting optimist. Maurice Flitcroft (Academy Award® Winner Mark Rylance), is a shipyard crane operator from Barrow-in-Furness, a port town in Cumbria, England. With the support of his family and friends, Maurice managed to gain entry to the 1976 British Open qualifying, despite never playing a round of golf in his life. With pluckiness and unwavering self-belief, he pulls off a series of stunning, hilarious and heartwarming attempts to compete at the highest level of professional golf. This draws the ire of the golfing elite while becoming a British folk hero in the process. The film also stars Academy Award® Nominee Sally Hawkins as Maurice’s wife Jean and BAFTA nominee Rhys Ifans as his nemesis Mackenzie.[2021, UK, 106 min, Rated: PG-13] Michael Medved of The Michael Medved Show writes, “Every bit as touching as it is funny...unlike its main character, the film has no trouble beating par.” Nate Adams of The Only Critic pens, “The Phantom of the Open is a breezy, delightful adventure unafraid of sweeping the viewer up in all the commotion and blitz surrounding Maurice’s unlikely journey.” Venue: Cinema Art Theater. Presenter: Rehoboth Beach Film Society.
