Hagley Museum historian, Lucas Clawson will speak on Delaware’s long- standing manufacturer Du Pont, who was the nation’s most prominent black powder manufacturer leading up to the Civil War. When fighting broke out in 1861, the Federal Government called on the company to
make black powder for the Army and Navy. Unstable economic conditions, Delaware’s political situation, and the uncertainties of war made it difficult for Du Pont to do business. Clawson will speak about DuPont’s decisions during this tumultuous time in our history.
Lucas R. Clawson is a historian with Hagley Museum and Library in Wilmington, Delaware. Lucas provides access to the Du Pont Company’s historical records, and researches and writes about the company’s history. Lucas curated Hagley’s Civil War exhibition, “An Oath of Allegiance to the Republic: The Du Ponts and the Civil War,” which ran from April 2011 to July 2012.
