Belfast

Belfast is a charming semi-autobiographical memoir written and directed by Kenneth Branagh as he recalls his childhood through rose-tinted lenses. The film received seven Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Director. Belfast depicts a violent, tumultuous time in the late 1960’s Northern Ireland, but it does so through the innocent eyes of a smart, cheery nine-year-old boy named Buddy (Jude Hill). He must chart a path towards adulthood through a world that has suddenly turned upside His stable and loving community, and everything he thought he understood about life has changed. Belfast is filmed in gentle black-and-white, with sporadic bursts of glorious color. The terrific cast includes Caitriona Balfe (Outlander), Jamie Dornan and Judi Dench. [2021, Ireland, 97 min, Rated: PG-13] Steve Crum of Video-Reviewmaster.com pens, “Mere minutes into the movie, you know something special, classically special, is unfolding.” Charlotte O’Sullivan of the London Evening Standard exclaims, “I loved it!”    Location: Cinema Art Theater    Admission $8.00 RBFS Members $11.00 General Venue: Cinema Art Theater.
