SUMMARY:The Mavericks: Live & Unplugged
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:The Mavericks\, the eclectic rock and country group known for\n
crisscrossing musical boundaries with abandon\, has gone through three\ndi
stinct phases since it was founded in Miami in 1989. An initial\nperiod of
heady success marked by big hits and critical acclaim in the\n'90s. A lon
g hiatus starting 2003 when the musicians each went their\nown way. And fi
nally\, a triumphant reunion in 2012 which held long\nenough for them to r
 ecently celebrate the band’s 30th anniversary.\n  Now\, The Mavericks h
ave ushered in the fourth phase of their\nevolution with the No. 1 Billboa
 rd debut of their first-ever\, all\nSpanish album\, \"En Español\,\" rele
ased on the band’s own Mono Mundo\nlabel. Although all 12 tracks are in
Spanish\, as the title suggests\,\nthe collection represents a diversity o
f musical styles and cultural\ntraditions\, from tender boleros to brassy
mariachi to reimagined\nAfro-Cuban classics. Seven of the tunes are famili
ar gems drawn from\nthe vast Latin American songbook\, while five are orig
inals written or\nco-written by Malo.   Like the band’s entire body of
music\, this\none album cannot be boxed into a single category. The songs
are as\ndiverse as Latin America itself\, and as cohesive as the ideal of
the\nAmerican melting pot. To season this rich musical paella\, The\nMaver
icks add their signature country/rock/Tex-Mex flavors and a\nrefreshing sp
ontaneity to the mix. \"En Español\" flips the band’s\nusual fusion for
mula\, which adds a striking assortment of genres —\nsalsa\, ska\, norte
 ño\, mariachi\, and much more — to its sturdy\nrock/country base. Now\,
the foundation is solidly Latin with streaks\nof irreverent rock and twan
gy guitars running through it\, all branded\nwith the unmistakable Maveric
ks style. Venue: Freeman Arts Pavilion.\nPresenter: Joshua M. Freeman Foun
 dation.
