SUMMARY:Styx at Freeman Arts Pavilion
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:The six men comprising Styx have committed to rocking the Parad
ise\ntogether with audiences far and wide by entering their second decade\
nof averaging over 100 shows a year\, and each one of them is committed\nt
o making the next show better than the last. Styx draws from over\nfour de
cades of barnburning chart hits\, joyous singalongs\, and\nhard-driving de
ep cuts. Like a symphony that builds to a satisfying\ncrescendo\, a Styx s
et covers a wide range of stylistic cornerstones.\nFrom the progressively
sweeping splendor that is “The Grand\nIllusion” to the hunker-down for
titude of all that is the “Blue\nCollar Man\,” from the majestic spiri
tual love for a special\n“Lady” to the seething indictment of preening
 \, primping pageantry\nfor pageantry’s sake of “Miss America\,” from
an individual\nyearning for true connection as a “Man in the Wilderness
” to a\nsoul-deep quest to achieve what’s at the heart of one’s pers
onal\nvision in “Crystal Ball\,” from the regal reach-for-the-stars\nb
ravado of “Come Sail Away” to the grainy all-in gallop of that\nrugged
“Renegade” who had it made\, the band draws on an unlimited\ncache of
ways to immerse one’s mind and body in their signature\nsound.\n\nStyx
hit its stride with guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw’s first LP\nwith the b
and\, 1976’s _Crystal Ball_\, and then they become the\nfirst group to
score four triple-platinum albums in a row: _The Grand\nIllusion_(1977)\,
_Pieces of Eight_ (1978)\, _Cornerstone_ (1979)\,\nand _Paradise The
ater_ (1981). Over the ensuing decade\, Styx\nweathered the shifting wind
 s of the public’s musical taste\,\nreconvening for a highly successful 1
996 _Return to Paradise_ tour\nthat was expertly documented on both CD a
nd DVD in 1997. With a little\nhelp from their many friends in Cleveland
’s Contemporary Youth\nOrchestra\, _One With Everything_ (2006) became
a hybrid orchestral\nrock blend for the ages. And on _The Grand Illusion
/ Pieces of Eight\nLive_ (2011)\, the band performed at its peak when ta
ckling every\ntrack from a pair of their finest triple-platinum albums bac
k to back.\nNot only that\, but the band re-recorded two discs’ worth of
its\nclassic material with much finesse and musculature\, aptly known\nas
  _Regeneration Volume I & II_ (2011 & 2012). Observes Tommy\,\n“Now yo
u have something you can take home with you and go\, ‘Yeah\,\nthat’s t
he band I saw last night.’ ”\n\nAfter more than a decade together on t
he road\, this incarnation of\nStyx is looking forward to performing as ma
ny shows as it can as long\nas it can. “It all comes back to the chemist
ry\,” says\nbassist/vocalist Ricky Phillips. “The legacy of this band
will be\nthat it brought joy to millions of people\,” notes drummer Todd
 \nSucherman. Observes keyboardist/vocalist Lawrence Gowan\, “We’ve\nal
ways tried to explain why this is this happening. It’s obviously a\nmult
itude of factors\, but the main one is that our show is _really\ngood_! A
nd if it’s really good\, they’re going to come to see it\nagain.” St
yx hopes it’s a wave that never crests. “Every night\,\nwe go on that
magic carpet ride together\,” observes original bassist\nChuck Panozzo\,
who joins the band on tour as often as he can. “Music\nis this amazing
force that comes from a higher place. I'm humbled for\nthis band to have t
he great success that it has\,” says co-founding\nguitarist/vocalist Jam
es “JY” Young. “We just want to keep on\ndoing this\,” asserts Tom
my. “We want to let life take its course\nand let this music continue to
be the soundtrack to it. And this band\nwill continue to evolve as long a
s we live and play this music.” The\njig is up\, the news is out: The Es
prit de Styx is alive and well\, and\nnow it’s time to see for yourself.
  Welcome to the Grand Evolution.\n
