SUMMARY:Still Life and Landscape: Oil Paintings by John Schisler
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:February 13 through March 8\, 2026 Opening Reception: Friday\,
February\n13\, 2026 (5pm-7pm) I’m very fortunate that by chance my first
\npainting lessons at age seventeen introduced me to the use of Maroger\nm
edium and the techniques of the Dutch Masters. My teacher\, Nancy Lee\nCon
rad\, was a student of Jacque Maroger who studied the mediums of the\nold
masters and developed what he believed was the same medium used by\nTitian
\, Rubens\, and Rembrandt. It took me several years after this\nfirst clas
s to appreciate the significance and history of this method.\nWhen I made
the decision to pursue painting full time\, I wanted to\nmake sure my meth
ods were as traditional as possible. This is why I\nmake my own medium\, b
lack oil\, varnish\, and grind pigments into the\nblack oil to make some o
f my paints. My still life paintings don’t\nalways start as a complete i
dea\, rather they develop over the course\nof the painting. I prefer to pa
int my still life paintings from life\nrather than a photograph to better
see shadows and highlights. I’ll\nset up a still life display of the mai
n components in a shadow box\nwith a spot light focusing on composition an
d color. As I’m working\non the painting\, new ideas come to me and I’
ll make changes or add\nsmall details. I’m always looking for unique bac
kgrounds\, settings\,\nand/or table tops that add more interest. I want th
e viewer to\ninitially be drawn to my painting through the color\, composi
tion\, or\nsubject matter\, and then the unique elements to hold their att
ention\nand possibly spark a memory or personal connection. For the past\n
couple of years my subjects have been classical still life but my\ninteres
ts vary widely. I look forward to once again challenging myself\nwith wild
life\, street scenes\, and nautical subjects. No matter my\ncurrent subjec
t\, I always want the painting that’s on my easel to be\nbetter than the
  last. Venue: Rehoboth Art League.
