SUMMARY:SODELO PRESENTS: OLD WORLD/NEW WORLD @ Epworth United Methodist Chu
 rch
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:THE OLD WORLD/NEW WORLD CONCERT: Under Music Director James All
en\nAnderson\, SODELO will perform works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and\nA
ntonin Dvořák\, featuring soloists Joseph and Ellen Turi. We know\nmany
of you loved hearing the Turis at one of our earliest concerts\,\nand we k
now you will welcome them back with open arms. The concert\nopens with Moz
art's brilliant overture to The Magic Flute. This\nmasterpiece features th
 e lighthearted \, high-energy spirit of a fairly\ntale with darker element
 s. The Turis will then perform duets and arias\nfrom some of Mozart’s mo
st beloved operas\,  After intermission\, the\norchestra will perform Ant
onín Dvořák’s cherished Symphony No. 9\,\n\"From the New World.\" Thi
s masterpiece reflects his experience and\nmusical observations in America
and is perhaps his most familiar work.\nOur choice of this piece is a ref
lection of our collective support and\ncelebration of America’s 250th an
niversary.  As master composers\,\nboth Mozart and Dvořák were magnific
ent storytellers. Mozart wove\ncomplex and marvelous tales through the spo
ken and sung word of his\noperas\, the music enhancing every twist and tur
 n. Dvořák\, relying\nprimarily on his music alone\, proved equally adept
at vivid musical\nnarrative—a skill fully realized in the descriptive p
ower of the\npiece that concludes our program. We have chosen our program
to\ncelebrate music you already love\, and to introduce you to pieces that
\nwill broaden your classical horizons. We believe we have done so here\,\
nand hope you will agree! THE SODELO STORY In February 2022\, violinist\nS
teve Greifer started reaching out on local social media to see if he\ncoul
d find some musicians to play chamber music with when he moved to\nMilton
in April. He hoped to play some duets or\, better yet\, play in a\nstring
quartet. Eva DelGallo\, a Lewes violinist and retired school\norchestra di
rector\, responded to Steve’s first postings with a much\nbigger vision
than a quartet. Seeing the enthusiastic response from\nthe string-playing
community\, Eva saw the opportunity to bring her\nlong time dream of an or
chestra in Southern Delaware to life\, and\njumped in with both feet. Our
third co-founder is our music director\,\nJames Allen Anderson\, head of O
rchestral Studies at University of\nDelaware. Steve and Eva reached out to
Jim in their search for a\nmusical leader\, hoping he would refer some of
his conducting students.\nInstead\, Jim volunteered to lead the orchestra
! By May 3\, an unnamed\norchestra of 30 string musicians held its first r
 ehearsal\, and on July\n16\, a newly named/formed/incorporated 501(c)(3) S
outhern Delaware\nOrchestra played its inaugural concert at Bethel United
Methodist\nChurch in Lewes to a standing ovation from a capacity audience!
Today\,\nwe are a full orchestra with many friends in the southern Delawa
re\ncommunity who support our efforts. We practice every Tuesday night and
\nhave a full roster of upcoming concerts ahead of us. Please visit our\nW
ebsite at sodelomusic.org to learn more about SODELO and how you can\nbe a
part of our story\, from playing with us\, to volunteering\, to\nfinancia
l support. We are all about creating a wonderful musical\nexperience for b
oth our members and our community\, and we plan to be a\nlong term member
of the cultural scene in Southern Delaware!! We hope\nto see you soon. We
are a welcoming community orchestra with members\nranging from retirees to
active professional musicians to talented\nteens! We play to enthusiastic
sold out houses from The Grand Opera\nHouse in Wilmington to the Rehoboth
Convention Center to our home at\nCape Henlopen High School. Our performa
nce this past summer on the\nFreeman Arts Pavilion stage in Selbyville was
yet another high note\nfor our orchestra and audiences\, and closing out
the year with two\nsold out performances of the Messiah commemorating the
Southern\nDelaware Chorale's 40th anniversary was the icing on the cake! O
ur\nupcoming March performances will continue to build on the short but\ne
xciting history of SODELO! Venue: Epworth United Methodist Church\,\nRehob
 oth.
