SUMMARY:She Who Shines: Art Exhibition
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Artistic renditions of the mystical female spirit come to the\n
Peninsula Gallery this March. “She Who Shines” features over 35\nworks
of heavily stylized and whimsical imagery of women. Through\nimaginative
aesthetics and intuitive art-making\, this exhibition\ncelebrates feminine
energy and the power of archetypal women in lore\nand history. The exhibi
tion\, which runs from March 7-29\, includes art\nfrom Kathy Daywalt\, Deb
orah Johnson\, Rachel Romano\, and Pritha\nSrinivasan.  An opening recept
ion will be held on Saturday\, March 7\,\nfrom 5:00 to 6:30 pm\, which is
free and open to everyone. Join the\ngallery staff and exhibitors for an e
vening of fine art and\ncomplimentary food and drink. Attendees will have
the opportunity to\nmingle with some of the show’s participating artists
.  Kathy\nDaywalt is an award-winning artist who has been honing her craf
t for\nmore than 40 years. She works in a variety of media\, but has opted
to\ninclude watercolors in this exhibit. She has been included in numerou
s\njuried exhibitions and solo showcases. Her interest in figures\nand be
autifully patterned compositions is evident in her work. Her\nlong experie
nce with linocut printmaking has carried over into her\npainting\, as she
employs artist-made linocut stamps as well as found\nobjects to create her
richly textured\, patterned paintings. Kathy’s\nwomen feel more like ch
aracters than subjects\, as their universal\nappeal could place them anywh
ere in the world. The flattened and\nelongated figures wearing royal regal
ia\, along with the appearance of\nmosaics and icons\, give the pieces a m
edieval feel\, evoking imagery\noften associated with folklore and mytholo
gy. Deborah Johnson is a\nmultidisciplinary artist whose work explores the
connection between\ninner life and the natural world. Working primarily i
n oil and cold\nwax\, she creates layered\, atmospheric paintings in which
women\,\nanimals\, water\, and landscape merge into a single emotional sp
ace.\nDeborah’s practice is rooted in material knowledge and traditional
 \nhand processes\, allowing each medium’s physical properties to shape\n
the final image. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries\nthr
oughout the United States and has been featured in institutional\ncollecti
 ons\, invitational exhibitions\, and community-based\ninstallations. For
“She Who Shines\,” Deborah is showing off both\nher oil paintings and
kiln-formed glasswork. Her luminous pieces fuse\nwomanhood with the natura
 l world\, exploring the quiet intersection of\nfigure\, environment\, and
inner life. While the glass pieces rely on a\nlimited palette and fundamen
 tal curvilinear shapes\, her paintings\nexplore light\, shadow\, and color
. Rachel Romano is a surrealist\nfigurative painter. Her inspiration is ro
oted in humanity’s\nadversity\, strength\, resilience\, and absurdity of
life. She considers\nherself a storyteller for adults\, expressing the my
ths and experiences\nof humanity. She has been featured in numerous public
ations\, blogs\,\nand interviews\, and her sketchbook and working drawings
are in the\npermanent collection of The Pennsylvania Historical Society i
 n\nPhiladelphia. Rachel’s surreal oil paintings are bold\, colorful\, an
d\nsymbolic. Each object featured in a scene serves as a metaphor for a\nd
eeper meaning. Conversely\, her pencil pieces offer the same\nstorytelling
but through stripped-back scenes and monochromatic\npalettes.  Pritha Sr
inivasan is a Mid-Atlantic self-taught\ncontemporary artist who has been c
reating art since childhood. Her\naward-winning figurative and nature-base
d watermedia artwork\ncelebrates the wonders within and the fleeting momen
ts we share on\nlife’s collective journey. She uses watercolor and acryl
ic to convey\nher unique narrative\, deeply influenced by her cultural her
itage\,\ntravels around the world\, literature\, and an abiding love of na
ture.\nBy combining dynamic color with detail\, her artwork transforms bot
h\nthe mysterious and familiar into something radiant and visionary. She\n
displays her artwork locally in juried art exhibits\, in addition to\ntaki
ng part in several invitational group shows. The ethereal women in\nPritha
’s watercolors are bathed in technicolor. While defined in\ntheir faces\
, the realism begins to fall away in other elements of the\npaintings\, su
ch as the garments\, hair\, and backgrounds. The vibrant\npigments flow fr
eely across the surface in an explosion of spirited\ncolor. “She Who Shi
nes” is on display from March 7-29. Works from\nthe show can be previewe
 d at www.peninsula-gallery.com and are\navailable for pre-sale.  The gall
ery is located in the Shops at the\nBeacon\, 520 East Savannah Rd. Lewes\,
  DE\, and is open Tue-Sat 10-5\, and\nSun 11-3. Venue: Peninsula Gallery.
