Bio Originally from Mexico and now\nbased in Baltimore\,  Francisco Loza
creates Arte de Estambre\, or\npressed yarn art by working on wood surfac
es that he covers in a\ncombination of waxes (found only in Mexico) that h
e mixes together and\nuses as an adhesive base. Onto these waxed wooden ba
ses\, Loza\nintricately presses\, cuts\, and shapes yarn into original art
work of\nmultiple colors\, sizes\, depths\, and themes.  His work reflect
 s a\nmyriad of concepts including the environment\, markets\, sea-side\nco
 mmunities\, abstract\, immigration\, families\, among others. Loza’s\nor
iginal art also highlights his interpretations of Mexican cultural\ntradit
ions and Huichol communities based on his first-hand experience\nof collab
orating with Huichol artisans in Mexico for over twenty\nyears. The artist
uses mixed media with chaquira (small beaded pieces)\nthat he embeds into
his original yarn artwork. Using a technique that\nrequires skill\, patie
nce\, and creativity\, Loza wants people to see\ntextures and movement in
his pieces. He has led workshops for students\nand teachers of all ages an
d skill levels in Mexico and the United\nStates. His workshops are dynamic
\, and he makes connections between\nculture and art that evoke the “ah-
ha” moment — when people can\nsee up close as to how he creates his un
ique\, profound artwork.\nLoza’s pieces are featured at the American Vis
ionary Art Museum\,\nMigration Policy Institute (MPI) and the U.S. Departm
