SUMMARY:\"Homage To...\": Contemporary Artists Paint in the Manner of Histo
 ric Masters
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Get an art history lesson with Peninsula Gallery’s June exhib
ition\,\n“Homage To…”\, where six contemporary artists paint in the
manner\nof historic masters. From June 1-23\, Jacalyn Beam\, Sydney McGinl
 ey\,\nNina Mickelsen\, Joe Milligan\, Nick Serratore\, and Nancy Richards
West\nwill display a collection of new work that honors a famous artist th
ey\nhave selected while still maintaining their own unique style and\naest
hetic.  An artist reception will be held on Saturday\, June 1\,\nfrom 5
to 6:30 pm and is free and open to the public. Attendees will\nhave the o
pportunity to mingle with some of the artists during the\nevening. Call (3
 02) 645-0551 or email peninsulagallery1@gmail.com for\nfurther details.
Jacalyn Beam is a nationally known plein air oil\npainter\, with her wo
rk being recognized across the country. Her work\nis included in various b
 ooks and publications\, including 100\nMid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters\, A
rt Collector Magazine\, Brandywine\nValley Reflections\, and more. In thi
 s exhibit\, Jacalyn is paying\nhomage to Edward Redfield\, a Delaware Impr
essionist and Plein air\npainter. Her images mimic Redfield’s well-known
scenery\, brushwork\,\nand style\, most notably in the winter landscapes
she features. \nSydney McGinley is a designated Master Pastelist with the
Pastel\nSociety of America. She has won national and international awards
and\nhas been featured in various established art publications. Her work
is\ncollected in the United States and Europe. Sydney uses her pastels to\
npaint in the manner of American Impressionist\, Mary Cassatt. The\ncorrel
ation between Sydney’s and Cassatt’s artwork lies in their\nfigurative
work\, as both women capture the essence of the female form.\nSydney will
feature six new portraits in this show\, three of which are\nstylized lik
e Raphaelite sketches\, leaving the original composition\nmarks on the pap
er.    As a Finland native\, Nina Mickelsen’s\nartistic roots are in N
 ordic design: clean\, bright colors\, bold\nshapes\, crisp\, strong lines
 — conveying energy\, strength\, and\nmotion. She draws her inspiration f
rom nature but also contemporary\ndesign. Nina’s chosen medium of silksc
reening pays tribute to Andy\nWarhol’s revolutionary pop art pieces. Lik
e how Warhol used brands\nand popular imagery to convey his artistic inten
 tion\, Nina uses bold\nicons like Tabasco hot sauce\, multi-color buoys\,
double-flavored\npopsicles\, and more to craft her pop art images. Joe Mil
ligan’s\nwatercolors evoke a sensitive and emotional feeling of time and
place\,\nwhich can be attributed his keen observations of the subjects an
d\ntheir surroundings. He is featured in galleries in PA\, DE\, and NJ\, h
as\nreceived awards at regional art shows\, and has appeared in books and\
nmagazines about the New Jersey coast. Andrew Wyeth is Joe’s muse for\nt
 his showcase\, embracing Wyeth’s atmospheric\, moody\, and rustic\nsubje
cts. Like Wyeth\, Joe’s paintings are void of people but their\npresence
and spirit are always there\, even if it’s just fleeting.\nNick Serrato
re works primarily in pastels — a medium he feels can\ncapture the tacti
le experience and majesty of the grand landscapes he\ndepicts. Nick has fe
atured in multiple solo exhibitions\, participated\nin various charitable
events\, and won numerous awards. Since he was an\nart student\, Nick has
been influenced by the work of German-born\nartist Wolf Kahn. Nick’s tec
hnique harkens back to Kahn’s\nmark-making\, which juxtaposes contrastin
g colors to blend warm and\ndark hues. While Kahn is known for his bright
and colorful images\,\nNick has opted to craft muted and melancholic paint
ings for this\nexhibit\, highlighting how he can take Kahn’s style and u
pdate it.\nNancy Richards West has been painting professionally since 1971
\, with\na focus on depicting the quiet beauty of wildlife and nature. She
\nworks in an array of styles and mediums but has focused on the ancient\n
 Asian art of Sumi-e painting\, or ink-wash painting\, for this\nexhibition
 . Nancy’s traditional Asian artwork is inspired by Sesshu\nTōyō\, a 16
th-century Japanese artist known to be the defining master\nof Sumi-e land
scapes painting. Her work replicates Tōyō’s soft\,\nmisty scenes and f
irm and energetic strokes\, allowing her contemporary\nimages to evoke a t
imeworn appearance.      “Homage To…” is\non display from June 1s
t to the 23rd. Works from the show can be\npreviewed at www.peninsula-gall
ery.com and are available for\npre-sale.  The gallery is located in the S
hops at the Beacon\, 520\nEast Savannah Rd. Lewes\, DE\, and is open Tue-
Sat 10-5\, and Sun 11-3.\nVenue: Peninsula Gallery.
