SUMMARY:Ephemeral: Works by Frank DePietro
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:March 31\, 2023 - April 30\, 2023 Corkran Gallery “I look at
nature\nfor inspiration and consider what strikes me as compositionally\ni
mpactful. The lotus plant easily lends itself to what I am trying to\nacco
mplish visually. It provides a seemingly endless possibility of\nvariation
. The lines\, forms and shapes allow for intriguing use of\npositive and n
egative space. The reflection of light passing through\nand bouncing off o
f leaves\, flowers and seed pods creates opportunity\nfor tonal and color
variation. These elements allow me to explore a\ndynamic of flatness and i
llusion within the surface of the painting.\nAll of this is encompassed by
the portrayal of the plant itself\,\ndictating a mood or sensibility of t
he work based on its state of\nexistence. I have always been interested in
the visual history of\npainting. The evolution of thought\, and how paint
ers have utilized and\nbuilt upon periods and movements that predicated th
em. I try to\nincorporate this into my work\, from traditional representat
ional\ntechniques to concepts of Modernism\, Abstract Expressionism and Co
lor\nfield painting. Conceptually\, my work is derived in a manner similar
\nto traditional and plein air landscape painting. It is an attempt to\nca
pture time\, through the changes in light and color displayed in the\nnatu
ral world. Opposed to taking in the vastness of my surroundings\, I\ntreat
nature as more of a still life. The focus is on the unique\ncharacteristi
cs of individual plant forms that collectively reveal\nthese more vast cha
nges. My initial reaction to any subject matter is\nvisual. I process the
elements of the landscape in front of me\, then\nframe it through the view
finder of a camera for my photo reference. My\nphotos are then cropped and
edited in relation to align with elements\nof painting that I feel will c
reate compelling compositions. My\nsentiments align with many aspects of t
he inherent symbolism of my\nsubjects. My intention is a simple portrayal
of existence through the\ncyclical aspects of life. The body of work is a
quiet contemplation on\nthe observations of the perennial nature of plants
\, in correlation to\nemotional and intellectual bonds we cast upon them.
Revelations of\nchange and a full circle of life are encompassed within it
s season of\nbeing. The plant first displays a vigorous growth of foliage\
, later\nthe beauty of the bloom\, followed by signs of decay and then a\n
regeneration. My appreciation and respect for each visible transition\nin
the life cycle has evolved and grown throughout my paintings\, each\neleme
nt serving a distinct role essential to an ultimate purpose”.\nVenue: Re
 hoboth Art League.
