 ilford\, Delaware. Serving as a mess attendant aboard the USS West\nVirgin
 ia during the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7\, 1941\, Miller\nhelped to
  move his mortally wounded captain to safety before taking\ncontrol of a m
 achine gun and returning fire at the attacking Japanese\naircraft. To hono
 r his bravery\, Miller was the first African American\nto be awarded the N
 avy Cross in 1942. He became an important figure\nfor civil rights and equ
 ality when his story was heavily publicized in\nthe black press. In 1943 M
 iller was killed in action when his ship\,\nthe escort carrier USS Liscome
  Bay\, was sunk by a torpedo. Miller has\nbeen honored with multiple names
 akes\, including the USS Miller\nfrigate\, the Doris “Dorie” Miller Me
 morial Park in Waco\, Texas\,\nand\, in 2020\, the aircraft carrier USS Do
 ris Miller (CVN-81).\n
