SUMMARY:Conversation with Tracy Slater\, Author of Together in Manzanar
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Join the Lewes Public Library\, Seaside Jewish Community\, and
the\nHistory Book Festival online for a conversation with Tracy Slater\,\n
author of Together in Manzanar: The True Story of a Japanese Jewish\nFamil
y in an American Concentration Camp. On a late March morning in\nthe sprin
g of 1942\, Elaine Yoneda awoke to a series of terrible\nchoices: between
her family and freedom\, her country and conscience\,\nand her son and dau
ghter. Anyone with even “one drop” of Japanese\nblood was ordered by t
he US government to relocate into a detention\ncamp. That is how Elaine Bu
chman Yoneda ended up in Manzanar with her\n3-year-old son and husband Kar
l Yoneda. The young child had serious\nillnesses\, and she refused to be s
eparated from him as he had to be\nsent to the camp with his father. This
would begin one of many\ndifficult decisions the family faced while incarc
erated in this\nisolated desert setting unfit for human habitation. Both E
laine and\nher husband supported the US cause in the war and became embroi
led in\ncamp political discord as well as in protests seeking improved\nco
nditions. These events of prejudice and the abuse of power are as\nrelevan
t today as ever. As one reviewer pointed out\, “this book\nfills a long-
overdue gap in the historical narrative\, giving voice to\na mixed-race ex
perience in discussions of World War II and Japanese\nAmerican incarcerati
on.” Tracy Slater\, a Jewish American author\, has\npublished in the New
York Times\, Wall Street Journal\, and Washington\nPost. She taught writi
ng for over ten years in Boston-area\nuniversities and in men’s and wome
n’s prisons throughout\nMassachusetts.  This collaborative program by t
he Lewes Public\nLibrary\, Seaside Jewish Community\, History Book Festiva
l\, and\nBrowseabout Books is part of a series in observation of America25
0\,\nwhich commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the\nDecla
 ration of Independence\, marking America’s Semiquincentennial. \nNOTE:
this meeting is being conducted through Zoom. You MUST REGISTER\nto receiv
e instructions for joining the meeting. Venue: Lewes Public\nLibrary.
